Founded in 1972 in Karur — one of India’s oldest textile clusters — Cheran Soft Goods is now in its third generation. We do one thing, and we’ve done it for over half a century: we make beautiful textiles, with care.
In the small town of Karur, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, looms have been part of family life for centuries. It is here, in 1972, that Cheran Soft Goods was founded as a home-textile workshop — producing woven cotton fabrics for Indian and international markets.
Karur is one of India’s most established weaving clusters — alongside Erode, Tiruppur, and Kanchipuram — with a textile lineage that predates the Industrial Revolution. To work in textiles in Karur is to work alongside the deepest reservoir of weaving skill on the subcontinent: master tailors, third-generation dyers, and family-run handloom workshops are part of the everyday fabric of the town.
For decades, Cheran supplied home textiles — bedding, kitchen linens, woven made-ups — to retailers and importers across the world. Quality was never a slogan; it was the only currency that allowed a small family business to survive in a market dominated by giant mills.
As the global wellness movement grew, so did the demand for thoughtfully made yoga and meditation textiles — bolsters, zafus, zabutons, eye pillows. Brands began sourcing from India for the cotton, but found that most factories treated yoga products as an afterthought, a side-line to bedding or apparel.
The third generation of Cheran saw an opportunity to do something different: to focus entirely on yoga and meditation goods, and to apply fifty years of textile knowledge to a category that desperately needed it.
Today, that focus is our identity. We don’t make bedsheets. We don’t make apparel. We make zafus, zabutons, bolsters, eye pillows, blankets, and yoga belts. We make them in GOTS-certified organic cotton. We make them under ISO 9001 quality management. We make them in a facility that pays fair wages and operates to ethical labour standards.
Today, our products are stocked in yoga studios from London to Los Angeles. Our partners include premium brands across the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, the Nordics, the United States, Canada, and Australia — some of the most thoughtfully positioned names in the category. Our facility in Karur handles every step from fabric sourcing through cutting, sewing, filling, packing, and export documentation.
We are proud of what we have built — and quietly excited about what comes next. Whether you are a single founder launching a new brand, a studio chain sourcing directly, or an established label looking for a more honest manufacturing partner, we’d be glad to speak with you.
